Spanish for Bilingual Teachers Seminar

Spanish for K-12 Teachers in Bilingual and Dual-Language

Immersion Classrooms

As the Hispanic population living in United States of America rises day by day, the demand for teachers who speak and understand Spanish as well as understand the Latino culture is also becoming more and more vital for successful teaching and learning.

The SBTS program is a two to three week program specially designed to help bilingual educators and future educators to enhance their instructional skills and knowledge of Spanish and culture for the purpose of improving their effectiveness with their Spanish-speaking students and parents. The SBTS program is open to anyone who is seeking an opportunity to improve their Spanish language skills as they relate to the act of teaching. These classes will be taught by native or superior level speaking teachers with experience in the primary and secondary Mexican school system.

In addition to improving your Spanish skills, Instituto Universitario Chac-Mool offers assistance in preparing for your own state's bilingual teacher credentialing and certification tests. Our qualified instructors will assist the student seeking an endorsement in Spanish by reviewing study materials for the oral and written sections of the language portion of these tests, including BCLAD, TOPT, NMTA.

The SBTS consists on:
• 3 hours of group Language Classes (groups with no more than 5 students)
• 2 hours of Workshops on following topics: Mexican Civilization, Introducción a Literatura Infantil y Juvenil, Lectura, Enseñanza de las Matemáticas en Español. La educación Primaria y Secundaria en México.
• 1 hour of Optional Activities: Tutorial session, Pronunciation, cultural lectures (charlas), etc.
• 1 or 2 hours of extracurricular evening activities such as: Mexican cooking classes, salsa classes, movies in Spanish, etc.

Starting date

The SBTS starting dates are:

1rst. Seminar: from July 3 to 21.
2nd. Seminar: from July 24 to August 12.

UCM recommends students to arrive on the Saturday prior to starting classes in order to attend the Sunday orientation session as well as the placement test and Oral Interview to tailor each student program according with their needs and proficiency level. This allows new students not to miss classes on Monday and also get acquainted with the city. Nevertheless UCM will offer a special Monday orientation session from 8:00 to 10:00am for those who prefer this option.

Participants will earn from 4 to 6 semester credits depending on length of study.
